NATIONAL COMMISSIONER Andrew Amerson reported on his trips to the East Coast, visiting among other places, Williamsburg Alexandria Scottish Games.

THE CHAIRMAN'S REPORT given by Howard Shaw stated that three of our Trustee's (Randy Glen, William A. McIntosh and Harry Smith) elected not to seek re-election due to poor health. To Randy, Bill and Harry, we wish them better health and want to thank them for their past services on the Board of Trustees. We lost three Trustees but gained three new Trustees. Neil Davis replaces Randy Glen for the West Coast Area, Ron Knowlton was elected to fill the seat as Trustee for the South Central Area, and Zelna Shaw was elected to fill the Southeast Area Trustee seat.

Howard further related the results of the 2007 Board of Trustee Election which confirmed the re-election of Trustees Bill MacWood for the Western Area, Fred C. Shaw for the East Central Area, and George Wiseman for the Northeastern Area.

We wish to thank all Trustees for their continued services to improving and representing the Clan Chattan USA. We ask all Members to support the Area Trustees by attending the Scottish Games and Gathering in your respective Areas or one nearby.

MEMBERSHIPS A discussion on the problem of improving our number of Memberships indicated that we should request the Chiefs of the Mackintosh, Macpherson, Farquharson, MacBain and Shaw, all of whom have a large following in the United States, to encourage their Members to support the Clan Chattan Confederation by joining the Clan Chattan USA as a Dual Member.

DUAL MEMBERSHIP is offered to all Constituent Clan Members who are current in their Clan dues by paying a Membership fee of $15 per year.

CULLODEN TALES
Stories from Scotland's Most Famous Battlefield
by Hugh G. Allison

Culloden Tales cover

We've just received notification of the publication of Hugh G. Allison's new book CULLODEN TALES. This work was launched by Mainstream Publishing in September 2007, and contains many stories of great interest to members of the Clan. Since many of the tales feature Clan Chattan highly, this would be a lovely Christmas gift.

Author Hugh G. Allison worked front-of-house at Culloden Battlefield for many years, which gave the opportunity to access hundreds of first-hand documents and contemporary accounts of the battle. He researched these so that he could more fully answer the questions of visiting Clan members. He also gathered stories from descendants the world over. Stories which had been told (and kept safe) in families for centuries. These have now been set down to tell the reader what they want to know, not to tell them what other people think they should know, about Culloden. There are many stories about the Clan's involvement in the 1745 Jacobite rising and the aftermath, along with haunting photographs of all of the clan graves and stones. Allison's principal motivation in writing this work was to ensure that this knowledge was not lost. You can purchase the book at Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com by clicking on Culloden Tales.

NATIONAL TARTAN DAY

On March 9, 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 41
recognizing National Tartan Day

Tartan Day, April 6, 2008 falls on a Sunday.

Since the United States Congress gave all Americans an official Tartan Day on April 6th. of each year, it behooves those of us with a drop or two of Scottish blood to take full advantage of the opportunity to share our cultural heritage in a positive manner with our local communities. And, perhaps, give a bit of publicity to the fact that we are also promoting Highland Games and Festivals somewhere along the line.

Many individual states had Tartan Days on their own calendars. But an effort was put forth to get a National one adopted, and April 6th was chosen because it is the anniversary of the declaration of Scottish Independence at Abroath Abbey in 1320. A line from that document is often quoted and has great appeal to the American psyche: "For we fight not for glory, no riches, no honours, but for freedom alone, which no good man gives up except with his life."

It was hoped that the adoption of a National Tartan Day would promote observances that would commemorate all the best in Scottish history and culture and highlight the great contributions that Scots and Scots-Americans have made to the history and development of the United States. The organizations referred to as the Scottish Coalition were especially instrumental in successfully promoting this effort. They stand ready to assist local organizations in obtaining information to use in promoting and observing Tartan Day each year on April 6th.

Americans of Scottish descent have played a vibrant and influential role in the development of the United States. From the framers of the Declaration of Independence to the first man on the moon, Scottish-Americans have contributed mightily to the fields of the arts, science, politics, law, and more. Today, over eleven million Americans claim Scottish and Scotch-Irish roots -- making them the eighth largest ethnic group in the United States. These are the people and accomplishments that are honored on National Tartan Day, April 6th.

Note: Many local communities have various festivals,
Highland Games and such on other dates throughout the months of
March and April to celebrate National Tartan Day.

The dates of these events will be posted on the Clan Chattan website
as soon as they become available.

In the meantime, click TartanDay.org for more information.

Scottish National Tourist Board:
Museum Rating MacPherson

Great thanks-giving news. I am delighted to announce that earlier this week we learnt that the Scottish Tourist Board inspector's recommendation that the Museum be granted a fourth star has now been accepted. This is the Tourist Board's second highest rating and the Museum can now boast to be one of only 47 museums from throughout Scotland and eight in the Highlands to have received recognition at this level.

The news of this accolade comes at the end of a season in which we have seen the third highest number of visitors in almost twenty years and also the award of a silver plaque under the Tourist Board's Green Business Scheme.

Morag and the rest of the team at the Museum - Bert Cooper, Davy Holt and Christine McIntyre - are a credit to us all and we thank them most warmly for their contribution over this past year; likewise my predecessor Ewen for driving us towards us attaining this award, and everyone else who works so hard in and around the Museum.

I hope that this news will inspire even more people to contribute to the Museum 'Vision Exercise' and that together we can celebrate even greater achievements in the future.

Yours aye & all good wishes
Bruce
